About Glenn Hauser

Glenn is a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served as a Combat Engineer. Spent most of his time at Ft. Polk, LA, 588th Engineer Battalion.

Glenn Hauser has devoted over 40 years to the coating industry as a painter, paint foreman, and business owner. He has also spent more than 20 years in the technical service department of a coating manufacturer. Over the last 20 years, he has conducted numerous failure analyses, supervised compatibility testing, and assisted with repair recommendations. Glenn is actively involved in the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) and serves as a voting member on several committees. He has been a member of NACE and SSPC for over twenty years until their merger created AMPP in 2020.

Coating Surveys

Overcoating can feel like rolling the dice, hoping that the newly applied coating system will maintain acceptable adhesion to the existing coating. Coating surveys are an excellent way to determine if a structure is suitable for an overcoat. Glenn Hauser Consulting can assist with a coating survey, taking the time to perform a thorough assessment of your facility. During the survey, we will examine several factors that can lead to valuable recommendations, including the following:

· A visual and physical inspection of the existing condition of the coatings.

· Determine what the existing coating is generically.

· Coating thicknesses

· The number of layers of the existing coating.

· Degree of chalking.

· Degree of rusting/ corrosion.

o Checking for pitting

· Coating adhesion

o ASTM D6677 Knife Adhesion

o ASTM D3359 Adhesion by Tape Test

o ASTM D4541 Adhesion by Dollie Pull-Off.

Check for chlorides and other non-visible contaminates.

With over forty years in the coating industry, working in various roles as an applicator, contractor, and inspector, I dedicated more than twenty years to the Technical Service Department of a major coating manufacturer. In addition to being an instructor for the AMPP Coating Inspection Program, we have the expertise to help ensure your project stays on schedule and is completed properly.

Specifications are among the most important documents for any coating project. However, we have noticed that they are often not completed properly, which can lead to confusion or even coating failures. I can help you create a well-written specification that leaves no room for error.

Coating failures can unfortunately happen, and there are times we do not fully understand why. Over the past 20 years, I have carried out numerous failure investigations and have trained others in the art of investigating failures.
