Adhesion Testing

Adhesion Testing You Can Rely On

There are many situations where adhesion testing is essential, whether you're verifying compliance with a project specification, evaluating the condition of an existing coating system, determining the suitability of an overcoat, or confirming the bond strength of a laminate or repair system

I provide independent, standards-based adhesion testing for coating systems on steel, concrete, and other substrates. Testing is performed in accordance with recognized ASTM standards and supported by decades of hands-on experience in coating inspections, failure analysis, and technical service.

Adhesion Testing Standards

  • ASTM D3359 – Standard Test Methods for Rating Adhesion by Tape Test
  • ASTM D4541 – Standard Test Method for Pull-Off Strength of Coatings Using Portable Adhesion Testers
  • ASTM D7234 – Standard Test Method for Pull-Off Adhesion Strength of Coatings on Concrete Using Portable Pull-Off Adhesion Testers
  • ASTM C1583 – Standard Test Method for Tensile Strength of Concrete Surfaces and the Bond Strength or Tensile Strength of Concrete Repair and Overlay Materials by Direct Tension (Pull-Off Method)

Common Reasons for Adhesion Testing

  • Verification of specification requirements
  • Evaluation of coating system performance
  • Assessment of overcoating suitability
  • Investigation of coating failures and delamination
  • Quality assurance during construction and maintenance projects
  • Determination of bond strength for repair materials, overlays, and laminate systems

Adhesion testing is more than simply attaching a dolly and recording a number. Proper surface preparation, test procedures, and interpretation of failure modes are critical to obtaining meaningful results.

With more than 30 years in the protective coatings industry, including coating inspections, laboratory testing, failure investigations, and technical consulting, I provide testing that is performed correctly, documented thoroughly, and interpreted with practical, real-world experience.

If you need adhesion testing for a project, coating assessment, failure investigation, or specification compliance, I would be happy to discuss your requirements.

Over 40 years of protective coatings, inspection, and failure analysis experience.
