Coating Condition Surveys

Overcoating Doesn't Have to Be a Gamble

One of the most common questions I hear is, "Can this coating be overcoated, or does it need to be completely removed?"

Unfortunately, making the wrong decision can lead to costly failures, premature coating breakdown, and unnecessary expense. The good news is that overcoating doesn't have to be a guessing game.

A coating survey is one of the most valuable tools available for determining whether an existing coating system is a suitable candidate for overcoating. By evaluating the current condition of the coating and substrate, I can help you understand the risks, limitations, and opportunities before a project begins.

During a coating survey, I perform a detailed visual and physical assessment of the existing coating system, including:

  • Adhesion of the existing coating system
  • Chalking and weathering of the coating
  • Rusting, rust undercutting, and delamination
  • Surface contaminants such as soluble salts, oils, and moisture
  • Generic identification of existing coating systems when required
  • Previous maintenance history and known service conditions
  • Environmental exposure and operating conditions
  • Accessibility and application considerations
  • Areas of coating failure or concern requiring further investigation

The information gathered during the survey is used to develop practical recommendations regarding overcoating, maintenance painting, localized repairs, or complete coating removal and replacement.

My goal is simple: provide you with the information you need to make informed decisions, reduce risk, extend the service life of your assets, and avoid costly surprises after the project starts.

With more than 30 years of experience in coating inspections, failure analysis, and technical consulting, I help owners, engineers, contractors, and facility managers approach coating projects with confidence.

Over 40 years of protective coatings, inspection, and failure analysis experience.
